From rage room to axe range
It started with a rage room. Smashing things is brilliant fun. Keeping a rage room stocked with things to smash is not, and it was a mare to keep up with.
Then we tried axe throwing overseas and it was a no-brainer from that moment on. The same release and the same noise, with a target that takes the hit and is still standing the next day. We opened at The Spice Yard in Salt River in 2021, first as XOXO Urban Axe Throwing, and today as Axe-O.
Why Salt River
Salt River is one of Cape Town’s most interesting neighbourhoods right now. Old factories and warehouses along Voortrekker Road and Albert Road have been turned into breweries, distilleries, studios, markets and galleries, and The Spice Yard sits in the middle of it, about 10 minutes from the CBD.
Inside The Spice Yard, The Doppery / BeerWorks brews craft beer and makes gourmet pizza across the corridor from the lanes. So you can throw, eat and drink in one building, then carry on into the neighbourhood.
Who runs Axe-O
Axe-O is owned by Patrick Reiss. Growing the business with him are two collaborative growth partners: Click Cherry, led by Chantelle Balsdon, who runs marketing, events and day-to-day operations, and Danny of Thunder Media SA, who builds the website and design. On the range, our hosts coach, score and run every session, and our event manager plans the private functions.

Everything at Axe-O sits in one of two groups. Pick the one that fits how you want to throw.
Book a session
🪓 Book a Lane · 75 min · R285 pp. Your own lane for up to 4 throwers. Choose any open time, book and pay online, and turn up ready to throw. Ideal for date nights, mates and small crews.
🏆 Join the Tournament · 2 hours · R350 pp. A hosted, open competition on Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday at set times. Book your spot upfront, because each tournament is capped at 30 throwers. Come solo or with your crew and we team you up on the day.
Events and occasions
Private bookings on the date you choose, quoted in advance. The range is yours for two hours, with a host, a tournament and a custom target.
💼 Corporate Events and Team Building. Year-end functions, team building and client days, with your logo on the target.
🥃 Bachelor Parties. The Groom’s Last Stand, with the groom on the target.
💅 Bachelorette Parties. The Bride’s Last Fling, with the bride on the target.
🎉 Group Bookings. Birthdays, reunions and club socials for 8 to 30 guests.
🎈 Kids Parties. Coached axe throwing parties for ages 12 and under.
Events and occasions from R350 pp, R315 pp from 15 guests. Kids parties R285 per child. Add a bar tab, pizza, a braai feast, a spit braai or paella by The Paella Ladies to your quote.
Safe equipment for younger throwers
Kids parties at Axe-O are for ages 12 and under, and they use equipment made for them. Children under 10 throw rubberised axes at specialist targets. From 10, they move up to standard targets and equipment with a coach beside them. Our crew supervises every throw, and an adult from the party stays on site throughout.
How every session runs safely
🦺 Briefing first. Nobody throws before a safety talk and coaching from our crew.
👀 Supervised lanes. Our hosts watch every lane from the first throw to the last.
👟 Closed shoes. Recommended for every session.
🍺 Throw sober-ish. We stop anyone who has had too much from throwing. The bar stays open, the axes don’t.
